March Madness
In March our class participated in a variety of exciting events. We began the month by celebrating Read Across America Week. Students were encouraged to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character, wear crazy socks to school, dress wacky, and enjoy wearing their favorite hat to school. We had parents come and read to us as we all enjoyed popcorn and punch. (Thank you again parents for coming) In writing once we wrote the recipe to teach about how to make a Dr. Seuss Snack we got to actually make it and enjoy it! Also, Brewster Middle School send over students to our class to participate in buddy reading. Last, we designed and built structures only using red cups and white card-stock to resemble the hat from The Cat in The Hat. Phew! And that was only the beginning...
As the month went on we finished our unit on measurement and jumped right into our unit on addition and subtraction within 10. Our class loved using manipulatives and working together to learn more about those two topics.
We tried to catch a leprechaun by designing and building traps from various recycled materials. Unfortunately, we didn't catch her, but she did leave us a special snack for our impressive work put forth.
We continued our work on increasing our phonemic awareness and sight words. The balloon pop smartboard game was a hit to practice sight words. Each student had to read a given sight word and when read correctly they would have the chance to throw a koosh ball at the smartboard and "pop" a balloon to try and reveal the gold coin.

It is back to school time!! I hope everyone enjoyed their summer! This blog will help me share with you all of the wonderful things our class is doing this year. There will also be helpful links for parents to use to gain more knowledge about our standards and learning expectations.  Please share the address with your child's family member's so they can share in the experience even from afar.  I look forward to a wonderful year!  -Mrs. Collins
We have been so busy here at school finishing up our apple unit. The students really loved all the food activities and I appreciate all of your support with the various apple donations. It was so sweet to see them make their apple pies and write the book to go with it. The apple tasting party was a hit of course, just because we had so many different options for the students to try.

Catching Up

Happy To Be Back  I am happy to be back on here sharing all of the fabulous things we have been doing the last two months.  Here students are working on subitizing with teen numbers. Whichever number they spun they had to find it on their paper in tally form, on a ten frame, using ten rods and ones, etc. Below are some pictures from a day that they explored blubber as a way that many polar animals keep warm. They were honestly unsure how the "Blubber Glove" would withstand the cold water, but it did end up protecting their hands from the cold water.  Students can be found playing a very traditional game that parents may remember as "War", but is now called "Top It". during this game students compare numbers 0-19. We used various decks to differentiate for different levels of learning. Another favorite game during the last two months has been Race to 50 or Race to 100. Students develop a greater unders...
